Articles: How to choose the correct paddle

I think the paddle is the most important piece of equipment - other than a lifejacket - in the sport of paddling. Choose between wing or flat conventional blades.  Ultimately it’s what you feel more comfortable using, but here's some information to help you decide…

Wing vs. conventional paddles
Wing paddles are named for their airplane wing like shape that allows the paddler to centre the blade easier and pull more water with each stroke. Wing paddles are also much lighter and shorter in length than the flat blade paddles that you will see in kayak shops or use when you rent. I am always amazed when I give a new paddler a wing blade and watch as their stroke instantly improves and they no longer complain of sore shoulders.

In the past, many paddlers have thought that wing paddles are for racers only. However, a wing paddle can benefit anyone who paddles a kayak, allowing them to be more efficient and use less energy during daily exercise or a weeklong tour.

Paddle length
When looking at wing paddles you will need to find the right length and blade size to suit your needs. Most top paddlers use between a 213 cm for shorter women to a 219 for a six foot male. The most common length is a 216 cm. Many paddlers believe the length should change drastically for what type of boat you are using. This is not true. If you use the proper technique then when using a wider boat such as a double you should use more twist in your torso to get the paddle out further. We will discuss this more in paddling technique.

Some paddles have a special joint in the middle that allows you to play with the length by 3-6 cm. These are great to adjust the right length for you especially if you share the paddle and that person is a different height. Just the blade of the paddle should be in the water when you stroke. If the blade does not fully submerge then you need a longer shaft. Like wise, a shorter shaft if the water comes up above the blade.

Blade size
The next decision is blade size. Most paddlers should use a medium blade. Sprinters are generally the only ones who benefit from a large blade and smaller women or men can use a small blade such as a junior model.
